Introduction
Scope
This select bibliography
lists primary and secondary sources on the history of Singapore from its
earliest times through the period of British rule, interrupted briefly
by the Japanese occupation, to independence and thereafter. The
bibliography will be useful to students and researchers interested in
the history of Singapore.
The titles listed in this
bibliography are mainly in the English, Chinese, and Japanese language
with a small number in the Malay language. All titles are held by the
NUS Library. In particular, microfiche and microfilm titles are held by
the Reprographic Services Dept. in the NUS Central Library.
The bibliography is
divided into three sections by language; namely English and Malay,
Chinese, and Japanese. Each language section is sub-divided by material
type covering official records; parliamentary records; books including
academic exercises, theses, and dissertations; chapters-in-books;
journal articles; journals; and newspapers. The most substantial portion
of the bibliography, the sub-section on books, chapters-in-books and
journal articles, is divided, mainly, by chronological periods. Some of
the chronological periods are then further sub-divided.
Arrangement
The entries are arranged
by author or title, with the title in italics. The call number is
bracketed at the end of each entry with the exception of titles in
microfiche and microfilm.
For citations of books,
the author's name is followed by title, place of publication, publisher,
year of publication, and the number of pages. For book chapters, the
author's name is followed by the title of the chapter, editor's name,
title of the book, place of publication, publisher, year of publication,
and the page numbers.
In the case of journal
articles, the author's name is followed by title of the article, the
title of the journal in which the article is printed, volume number,
page numbers and year of publication.
